Wastewater, Sewage, and Effluent Treatment

Buildings and developments that cannot connect to mains sewer infrastructure - or that generate trade or process effluent - need an on-site treatment solution. Whether the driver is regulatory compliance, a remote or off-grid location, limited municipal capacity, or the opportunity to reuse treated water, Hydrotec designs and delivers systems that are built around the specific requirements of the site.We work across commercial, hospitality, healthcare, industrial, and mixed-use sectors, with clients ranging from M&E consultants and contractors at the design stage through to facilities managers, site operators, and building owners managing operational systems.
Inadequately treated wastewater carries serious consequences.
Untreated or poorly treated sewage and effluent discharged to ground, watercourses, or municipal drainage without appropriate consent is an environmental offence in most jurisdictions - carrying penalties for building owners, operators, and responsible individuals. Beyond the legal risk, untreated discharge causes lasting damage to local ecosystems and creates public health hazards that regulators treat with increasing seriousness.

For industrial and commercial processes, trade effluent often contains contaminants - suspended solids, oils, fats, heavy metals, high BOD/COD loads, or chemical residues - that require treatment before discharge is permissible at all. The consequences of non-compliance range from enforcement notices and fines through to site closure.
Treated wastewater is also a resource.
With freshwater supply under increasing pressure - particularly across the Middle East, North Africa, and other water-stressed regions - high-quality treated effluent is a valuable asset. Systems designed to produce reuse-grade output can supply irrigation, cooling tower make-up, WC flushing, and other non-potable applications, reducing freshwater demand and the operational costs that come with it.
Discharge standards are set and enforced by environmental regulators in every jurisdiction.
Consents define the quality to which effluent must be treated before discharge -- covering parameters such as BOD, suspended solids, ammonia, and in some cases specific industrial contaminants. Standards vary by country and application, and are tightening in most regions. Hydrotec designs systems to meet the applicable consent requirements for the site, and where treated water reuse is the target, to the quality standard required for the intended end use.

Sewage Treatment

For buildings and developments not connected to mains sewer, packaged sewage treatment plants provide an on-site solution sized to the building's population equivalent and discharge requirements. We specialise in buildings - hotels, resorts, hospitals, campuses, staff villages, remote facilities, and can additionally support with larger volumes.

Biological Treatment Technologies

  • Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) - compact, robust, and well-suited to variable or seasonal loads
  • Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) - producing high-quality effluent consistently suitable for reuse applications
  • Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) - low-energy, mechanically simple biological treatment
  • Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) - flexible, single-tank process well-suited to intermittent flows
  • Extended aeration and activated sludge systems - proven, reliable treatment for consistent loads

System Features

  • Fully packaged, skid-mounted systems for efficient installation and commissioning
  • Bespoke design to meet site-specific discharge consent requirements
  • Technology selected to suit the flow profile, discharge standard, and available footprint
  • Integration with treated water reuse schemes where required
  • SCADA and telemetry options for remote monitoring and performance verification

Effluent Treatment

Trade and process effluent from commercial and industrial operations typically requires pre-treatment before it can be discharged to sewer or to the environment. The nature of the treatment process depends entirely on the effluent characteristics - its volume, temperature, pH, and the specific contaminants present.

Common applications include laundry and linen operations, commercial kitchens and food service, healthcare and laboratory facilities, light manufacturing, vehicle wash, and swimming pool backwash. Each produces a distinct effluent profile requiring a tailored approach.

Physical and Chemical Treatment

  • Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) for removal of suspended solids, fats, oils, and greases
  • Lamella clarification for space-efficient solids separation
  • pH correction and chemical dosing
  • Coagulation and flocculation for fine solids and colloidal material
  • Grease traps and interceptors for kitchens and food service

Biological & Membrane Treatment

  • Biological treatment for high BOD/COD effluent streams
  • Ultrafiltration (UF) and multimedia filtration for polishing
  • Combined biological and membrane systems where a higher output quality is required
  • Effluent characterisation and treatability assessment prior to system design
